Pictograms

Pictograms are amongst the simplest characters and usually consist of a single component. They tend to represent basic things like people, the sun, water and so on. There early forms are visually close to their denotations while later forms tend to become more abstract. Quite a number of these pictograms also function as the semantic component in complex characters, sometimes in slighlty modified form.
