Shakyamuni and Prabhutaratna
Six Dynasties Period
Dated 518
Guimet Museum, Paris

Prabhutaratna is the Buddha of the Remote Past and has come to bear witness to the teaching of Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha. This symbolizes the continuity of Buddhist law throughout time. Seated before a flame halo, or mandorla, these two wispy, ethereal figures with sloping shoulders and linear, waterfall drapery are reminiscent of brushwork and are distinctly Chinese in appearance.
