Maori men generally had tattoos on the face and on
the lower part of the body between the waist and the knees. The
art of tattoo was widespread in Oceania.
The typical design of men's facial tattoos consisted of broad, curving parallel lines from nose to chin and over the eyebrows to the ears. Small spiral patterns adorned the cheeks and nose. Additional spirals or other patterns were placed on the forehead and chin and in front of the ears. The whole design was symmetrical
