Bernardus Geldinus
Christ in Majesty
St. Sernin, Toulouse, France
c. 1096

This is one of seven large marble reliefs which decorate the choir of the great pilgrimage church of St. Sernin.

Christ sits in a mandorla with his right arm raised in blessing and his left arm on a book with the words, Pax vobis, Peace be unto you. The symbols of the four evangelists are at each corner. Although this work is in marble it seems that it could have been a composition in metal. The lines are all sharply incised. This rigid frontal figure is a reminder of late Roman sculpture like that found in the Byzantine like figure on the ivory diptych of the Archangel Michael. It is severe and blocklike.
