I’m Michael, your professor.  I’m actually a real person, who loves to talk to his students outside of class.  So don’t hesitate stop by during office hours, call my office, or best yet, email me to set up an appointment to talk in person or over the phone.  In fact, we can accomplish things much more efficiently by actually speaking with each other!   If you live on another island, UH will even pay for the call!

For issues other than quick questions, it is best if we make an appointment to talk, be it in person or over the phone.

You are welcome to leave a voice mail on office phone, but please also send me an email.  Email is my “best” message machine!

Office Hours

Check your course syllabus for my office hours.  If you cannot make office hours I can be available at other times by appointment. We may have to schedule the time in advance, but I am confident we can arrange a time to talk.  We can also meet via the phone – but sometimes we may need to both have an internet connection to make it work

Please don’t hesitate to talk to me

Regardless of whether you are an online or an “in person” class please do not hesitate to contact me in ways other than email!   If you are in an “in person class” talking face to face is no problem, (talk to me in class!) but don’t hesitate to speak to me outside of class as well, either in person or on the phone.

For online students, I do not want you to think that we are restricted to email communication.   I love speaking with online students in person an on the phone and I think speaking to each other is still the most effective communication tool we have -- we’ll get a whole lot more done in a whole lot less time!  In fact, we can accomplish things much more efficiently by actually speaking with each other rather than email.  Online students should pay special attention to that idea – talking “erases confusion” about 50 times faster than email!

Email and when I check it

All students who are enrolled in a course, please use the laulima email tool – called “Messages” – in our laulima website.  Those who are not enrolled in a course should obviously use regular uh email (hallston@hawaii.edu).

I am able respond to emails within two working days, Monday through Friday.   Generally speaking, M-F, I have about a 24-hour turnaround, but I say two days just to be safe. There are occasions when my other teaching, research, and service duties make the time stretch to two working days.  I do occasionally get sick as well, but again that’s rare.
