AAT SUPPORT SERVICES
Dedicated Counseling and Advising ·
A full-time counselor is assigned to provide AAT and
pre-education majors with academic advising, career, personal, and financial
aid counseling, and general support. · Peer Mentor Program: At Leeward CC we want every student to be successful. The Peer Mentor Program is an effort by the Education Program that seeks to support students when they first begin experiencing difficulty in an education course. If the instructor feels that you are having difficulty in the course (e.g., missing assignments), then s/he may refer you to the program. Once referred, you will receive an email sent to your hawaii.edu account, and a Peer Mentor will contact you to schedule an appointment and offer you different options for meeting (in-person, Skype, phone, email). While meeting with a Peer Mentor is optional, past data shows that three out of four students that do meet with a Peer Mentor at least once complete the course successfully.
Email Listserve · Students can subscribe to an email listserve to receive notices regarding upcoming campus events, registration information, scholarship opportunities, updated program requirements, transfer options, and general information of interest to pre-education majors.
Updated Website · Current information regarding program requirements, events, jobs, and department contact information can be found at www.lcc.hawaii.edu/teach.
Professional Development Opportunities · Professional development for students interested in a career in education is provided in the form of workshops, mentorship opportunities, and our annual Educational Summit, an evening student conference. Workshops have included teaching strategies from local and nationally recognized guest speakers, preparation and review for Praxis I (PPST) exams, and related topics of interest (e.g., Pidgin in the Classroom, Graphic Tools for Teachers, Building a Learning Community).
Future Teachers Club · Support * Reach * Teach is the motto for the LCC Future Teachers Club. Formed in 2006, this exciting student activities club is one of the fastest growing organizations on campus. Community service, socials, professional development activities, and fundraising events help to provide a supportive environment where future teachers (or those just interested in learning more about teaching) can come together to network, support, and grow with one another.
Information Sessions · The AAT program holds evening information sessions once per semester. These sessions allow current and prospective AAT students to learn more about the degree requirements, course offerings, and financial aid opportunities. In addition, participants get to meet the faculty, staff, and students that make this program unique and truly “supportive.”
College Transfer Workshops · A key component to the AAT program is providing options and information for students interested in transferring to state-approved teacher education programs. College transfer workshops offer a chance for students to plan their next steps after LCC. College advisors from UH Manoa and Chaminade are also offered space to provide one-on-one, in-person advising for LCC students on our campus.
AAT Workroom · For students looking for a place to “hang out” in between classes, the AAT program has set up an AAT Workroom equipped with laptops, printer, supplies, children’s literature, and a comfortable place where students can relax, study, network, and feel a part of our program!
