Description: lessonplans.gifWriting A Standards Based Lesson Plan

WHAT IS THE ASSIGNMENT?

v  Now that you have gotten to really know the development of your case study, and his or her overall background, it is time to teach them something. In this assignment, you will decide upon something that you want to teach your case study, create a lesson plan  to carry out your teaching strategies, and assess the progress of your case study’s learning.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS ASSIGNMENT?

v  The “bread and butter” of teaching in the DOE is developing a standards-based lesson plan. This simply means that you have created a plan to help your students reach the standards established by the DOE. Whether or not you approve or disapprove with the present DOE standards, the idea of teaching to standards is becoming the “standard” J  practice across the United States.  If you do not intend to become a DOE teacher, this assignment is still very important to do because if you ever do any kind of teaching (nursing, counselor, etc.), it will help you clearly develop a plan that is effective and where learning can be measured.

CHOOSING YOUR TOPIC TO TEACH TO YOUR CASE STUDY

v  You are welcome to choose any topic to teach your case study; however, for teaching majors, I encourage you to choose an academic topic that represents the type of information that you may teaching someday (or are teaching). If you are not a teaching major, I suggest choosing a topic that involves something you may encounter in your future professional career (e.g., how to rehabilitate a leg injury as a nurse). If you are a parent, then  you may want to choose a real topic that you want  your child to learn, or if you don’t plan to do any teaching at all, then choose a topic that you want to learn for yourself. Again, might be a little weird teaching yourself that topic, but it can be done. Keep in mind that whatever topic you choose, the planning is the exact same approach that all educators employ, and so you will gain valuable insight how to create a powerful learning lesson. With all that said, you can also choose to teach something non-academic, which will still require you to use all the same aspects and approaches that are included in formal academic subjects in a standards-based lesson plans. The sailing example model for this assignment is proof of that!! : )

v  Description: MCj00887360000[1]For teaching majors, this assignment also prepares you for one of your teaching certification test: Principles of Teaching and Learning (PLT) because you are asked to create a standards-based lesson that demonstrates your ability to put together an effective lesson that is measurable.

v  AAT majors may include this assignment as part of their ED 295 teaching portfolio for  HTSB Standard 3, 6,7, or 8.
