Lab 5: Population and Geography

Due Date: Check Calendar

Submission: Via Lab 5 under Tasks, Tests and Surveys

Procedure: You can write out answers on your own paper, but the answers must be typed/entered when you open Lab 5 under Tasks, Tests and Surveys. The lab is a 10 points lab, but contains 2 extra credit points.

1. Without doing any research, write down you first response to the following question: What percentage (percentage, not number) of the world's population lives in the United States of America? ( 1 point--regardless of your answer!)

2. Check the following website to find the approximate current population of the world and of the United States: http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html

What percentage of the world's population lives in the United States of America? (You will have to figure this out yourself using the world's total population and the U.S. population! Be sure you divide the US population by the world population in order to obtain the percentage--and watch your decimals!) [Feel free to explore the entire site--it has lots of interesting information.] (2 points)

3. When I ask question #1 in my live classes, at least 30% of all students provide answers in excess of 50%. Regardless of your own answer, provide at least two examples from American socialization that would explain this example of ethnocentrism: why would so many high school graduates believe that America could possibly contain half or more of the people of the world? (Remember, socialization occurs via parents, peers, the educational system, religion, and the mass media. Be specific in your answer. If your own answer to #1 was way off, how did you personally learn such misinformation? Write in complete sentences.) (2 points)

4. On the map below, identify the six countries with the letters (A through F) in red: A = etc. (1 pt)

5. With regard to this class and the cultures and topics we have covered, answer the following matching questions (within the lab, you will record this as a matching type question--please be aware that the order of the answers will vary at random within the actual lab when you submit your answers. Countries A and D are not included in the matching.) (2 points)

6. /7. On the maps below, identify the countries with the letters in red. (Note the letters refer to countries, not cities.) A = etc. (1 point for 6, 1 pt. for 7)
