Welcome to MICR 130
My name is Helmut Kae, and I will be facilitating your learning experience as you get exposed to the wonderful world of microbes. I was born in Germany (Münster), but moved to Vancouver (on the west coast of Canada) for my formative years, so I consider myself 100% Canadian. Like a Canadian, I love hockey (Go Canucks Go!), coffee and donuts, and my comedy with plenty of satire, eh? I completed my PhD in Microbiology and Immunology in the summer of 2007, and started here at Leeward Community College in January 2008. I have published a few articles for an online resource on topics such as biopharming and genome sequencing (at one point I thought I wanted to be a writer, until I realized I wasn’t very good at it). My main goal is to help you learn life-long learning skills so that you can not only succeed in MICR 130, but in anything you do for the rest of your life.
A word of warning. MICR 130 will be a difficult journey for many of you. The volume of content you will be exposed to will be great, the time to “master” the content will be short. The key to doing well in this course is to stay on top of the material, do not let tasks slide. Unforeseen circumstances occur at the most inconvenient times, so try to complete tasks ahead of time in order to avoid being inconvenienced by unforeseen circumstances. This, of course, applies to everything you do in life.
Another aspect of any online course is the fact that you are responsible for your own learning. Using the discussion board will help in your learning of the material. If you have a question, post it. If you know the answer to a posted question, answer it. These types of discussions will let you know how well you have mastered the content.
Feel free to contact me if you have any concerns (I prefer email), or drop by my office, my door is always open for my students (but it's best to contact me prior, in case I step out). I hope you have a wonderful experience in this course. Have a good day, eh?
