SSCI 210 : "Statistical Analysis 1"

Online  Summer 2013

This is a tentative course schedule that may have to be changed

updated as of:  7/5/2013 11:35 AM

Important note about experimental videos

There are two versions of experimental videos one I call “best quality” and one I call “lower quality.”   They are just that – an experiment!   I do not know how well or poorly they will work.

“Lower quality” videos

For the lower quality videos I personally video taped myself for a semester with a cheap digital camera and put them up on the web.  I’ve used these for a couple of years and students have reported there are times when the picture and sound are poor and other times when it’s perfect.  I did the best I could on my own. You will need the free software called Real Player to view the videos.   Go to realplayer.com and download the free version.  If you have trouble read the following link:    Help Playing Online Lectures

“Best quality” videos

The best quality videos were done very recently by a brand new IT person hired at UHWO for this purpose.  He used two cameras.  Camera 1 takes screen shots every few moments and you can actually zoom in on this picture and move it around.  That should allow you to see what I write on the board more clearly.   Camera 2  is a side shot of me to give you sound and some visual continuity.    The thumbnail frames on the bottom allow you to see progress as you fast forward using fast forward bar [or whatever it’s called].  The IT people inform me they will work with any browser and MAC or PC.

Text Box: Camera 1 captures screen shots of board and allows you to zoom and move image

Text Box: Camera 2 for sound and video continuity

Text Box: Thumbnail frames and fast forward bar

Thus the official lectures for the course are the text lectures.

Because both of these video streams are expericemental,  the official lectures for this course are the text pdf files!  Let me say that again:  the official lectures for this course are the text pdf files!   The videos are NOT a substitute for reading the lectures [or attending class for in person classes].  Lastly, I do not have videos for all the lectures; but I hope to add them in the future if these videos work.

You should read the text lectures first, then if you wish watch one of the experimental video streams.  But above all, I expect you to read the text lectures.

Since I have no idea how well or poorly even these high quality videos work, if you want to give me feedback on them that would be great.  If you notice issues you will need to note the exact elapsed time where the issues occur.

The note above about the experimental videos and note that the official lectures for this course are the text pdf files!  Let me say that again:  the official lectures for this course are the text pdf files!   The videos are NOT a substitute for reading the lectures [or attending class for in person classes].  Lastly, I do not have videos for all the lectures; but I hope to add them in the future if these videos work.

Read the following links:

Here are the best ways to contact me and when I’m available.

Read syllabus, HW's #1 and 2 (links below),  how to take statistics online

Also read this very important link about early drafts.

Watch this video: come get help when lost!

Read this about how to avoid double emailing professor

Download and install the SPSS software tonight so you don't have problems right before you need to use the program [see the syllabus for more information and links to find SPSS software].

Take note of the due dates for all tests and HW's [below in this course schedule].   Due to the nature of an accelerated summer school session, we will cover the material very quickly.  The test due dates will allow you some study time, but do not wait until the test due dates to take the tests.  Take the tests much earlier than the due dates, as suggested by this schedule, and you will be very happy.  Procrastinate and your performance will suffer greatly.

** book no longer in print but if you can find it on internet you can use it

see "Optional Book Information" on the syllabus for  book information

Please read my policy on early drafts.  I suggest early drafts and will return drafts on a "first-come first-served" basis to the best of my ability.  As deadlines approach I might send you an email saying "all the early birds have eaten the worms" meaning I won't be able to review any more drafts before the deadline and you have to do your best on your own.  I work very hard on early drafts but I'm only human and can only do so many.  This is your early warning.  I don't want you to be left struggling, confused, and lost all on your own!

In general, I will review one draft of each problem and email it back to you with suggestions to fix the errors.   The next time you send me the question I will “grade it.”  It is okay to finish the assignments and tests early and piece by piece in this fashion.

Short [3 min] video explaining how to avoid cheating on test 3 and 4 and important hints on how to do well on tests 3 and 4

Hint for Test 3 and Test 4 (which are both take home exams): Study by doing practice problems.  When done w/ practice problems do take home exam question related to the lecture.  Professor will review EARLY drafts of take home exam questions to the best of his ability!

Regardless of whether or not you do an early draft of test 3 and 4, please cut and paste the exam into your word processing program and type out answers and insert spss output into the proper places.

I give lots of hints in the tests when I ask some things to hopefully help you avoid common errors.    Also, for example, sometimes people omit  a portion of the answer which obviously loses points.   So a common error on problem 1 of  test 3 is to not plug in the numbers into the confidence interval formula.  I not only ask for this but I give a hint in yellow highlights where to find an example of how to do it.

Thus cutting and pasting the exam into your word processor and typing out the answers is the best way to ensure a high grade on tests 3 and 4!

I will review one draft of each problem and email it back to you with suggestions to fix the errors.   The next time you send me the question I will “grade it.”  It is okay to finish the assignments and tests early and piece by piece in this fashion.
